Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is a high relevant measurement and one of the main parameters for monitoring pollutants in civil and industrial wastewater: it symbolizes the level of oxygen necessary for the oxidation of all organic and inorganic substances (in mg/1 or mg/m3).

The analysis that can be carried out
The procedure
In order to perform COD analysis, it is necessary to have:
- precision micropipette for sample measurement;
- thermoreactor for heating the sample (150°C for 2 hours);
- tube rack for cooling the hot test tubes;
- photometer or spectrophotometer with housing for 16 mm round tubes (e.g., UviLine);
- Hydrocheck MONOTEST COD kit suitable for the expected concentration.
Each MONOTEST COD contains 21 round 16-mm optical glass tubes sealed with screw caps. Twenty of them contain the reagent required for the analysis, based on potassium dichromate and sulfuric acid, the twenty-first the blank for zeroing the instrument.
To perform the analysis, a precise amount of sample is simply added to a tube containing the reagents. Moreover, digestion is carried out in a thermoreactor (development of coloration) and, after cooling to room temperature, the absorbance of the sample is measured with a photometer or spectrophotometer, thus determining the concentration of COD in mg/L.
Whichever method is used, it is necessary that the sample to be analyzed be perfectly homogeneous.
