- In the field of water purification, one often speaks of ‘nitric nitrogen’ (which corresponds to nitrates), ‘nitrous nitrogen’ (which corresponds to nitrites), and ‘ammoniacal nitrogen’ (which corresponds to ammonia), however, concentrations are generally expressed as NO3 for nitrates, NO2 for nitrites, and NH3 for ammonia.
