Acidity m is a measurement of the number of mineral acids contains in water. It is measured by titration with sodium hydrate, against the indicator m (originally methyl orange). It is usual to speak of acidity m (lowercase m) when the result is expressed in epm (equivalents per million) and acidity M (capital M) when the result is expressed in °f (French degrees) or in ppm CaCO3. In Germany, acidity m is also called “-m value”, or else negative m value, in Anglo-Saxon countries is called FMA (Free Mineral Acidity) and in France TAF (Titre en Acides Forts libres).

• The classic indicator (methyl orange), from which the analysis takes its name, has been replaced by the "Indicator M" which has a more precise color change and which changes to identify the end point of the titration much more easily.
• The Titratest titration syringe makes it possible to obtain, even for field analyzes, a precision comparable with that of laboratory burettes, both in high values and in minimum values, with very limited consumption of sample and reagents. This precision also allows higher sensitivities to be obtained on samples of more than 5 ml.
• HYDROCHECK kits (which can be purchased directly) allow to perform a variety of precise analyses at a very low cost per analysis. If accuracy is not mainly important and there are few analyses to be performed, it may be favorable to use DROPS kits, whose cost per package is considerably lower (to be purchased through resellers).
