Titratest

Titration is a highly precise volumetric analysis, widely used in analytical chemistry, which allows to accurately determine the unknown content of a specific existing analyte in the water (eg Alkalinity, Hardness, Calcium, Chlorides, Oxygen, Sulfites, etc.). ). The reaction works by reacting water with a specific reagent, of known concentration, called titrant.

The end of the reaction is detected by a reagent called indicator that changes the color of the solution being analyzed (e.g. from colorless to fuchsia, or from red to blue).

The HYDROCHECK TITRATEST kits allow simplified titration, containing everything necessary to make the determination, even in places other than laboratory.

The sample to be analyzed is taken by the special 5 ml supplied syringe and it is placed in a test tube. While the addition of the indicator or other reagents is carried out in drops, directly from the bottles, the titrant solution is dispensed by means of the special titration syringe with 74 cut, filled directly by the titrant bottle and reset by bringing the piston to zero .

Titration is carried out easily by maneuvering the titration syringe with a hand and shaking the test tube containing the sample with the other one.

The syringe, made in Switzerland, has the precision of a good laboratory burette but it has a much smaller footprint and it is much more convenient and economical to use. Normally the analyzes are carried out on 5 ml of sample and each notch of the syringe corresponds to the value marked on each titrant bottle, for example to 1 degree for the hardness. The value found can be read directly on the scale of the titration syringe.

To increase the sensitivity of all the methods, it is sufficient to carry out the titration on a higher quantity of solution, for example by working on 50 ml.

To work on 50 ml it is necessary to use a container not included in the kit, for example a glass or a conical laboratory flask. The precision of the syringe allows the operator to work on any quantity of solution from the holder. Each kit is equipped with its own titration syringe, to be used always and only with the same titrant.

HYDROCHECK TITRATOR

The HYDROCHECK TITRATOR (STEPPER 411) is a Swiss made high precision multipette. We deliver it together with a precision syiringe graduated from 0 to 74, to be fitted into the Titrator. This instrument is used mainly as:

A) HANDHELD TITRATOR

One can use the above syringe alone for precise titrations and read the result directly on the graduation. Depending upon the used HYDROCHECK TITRATEST each grade is one french degree (1 french degree = 10 ppm CaCO3) or 1 epm. Using the syringe together with the HANDHELD TITRATOR the precision can be increased especially at low values. After filling the syringe with the blue graduated wheel on 74 x 50, the first step zeroes it automatically and each further step is exactly one grade of the graduation. Putting the blue graduated    wheel on 6×500 it is possible to do quick titrations, because in this position each step equals ten grades of the graduation. Putting it on 14 x 250 the piston of the syringe advances 5 grades for each step.

B) THE TITRATOR AS PRECISION PIPETTE

In some cases one has to measure small and precise sample quantities, like 2 or 3 ml (f.e. for the COD test). In those cases the TITRATOR can be used together with the above syringe as a precision pipette. Putting the blue graduated wheel on 6 x 500 each advancement displaces exactly 0.5 ml. Therefore two advancements are 1 ml, four are 2 ml and 6 are 3 ml. To measure more than 3 ml without loosing precision it is enough to refill the syringe and to continue.

THEREFORE ONE TITRATOR REPLACES BOTH PRECISION BUERETTES FOR EVERY HYDROCHECK TITRATION AND PRECISION PIPETTES FOR THE EXACT MEASURING OF WATER OR OTHER LIQUIDS.

The HYDROCHECK TITRATOR (STEPPER 411) can also be used for other purposes. Take the case of a water sample which is too concentrated for direct testing with HYDROCHECK COLORTEST or SPECTRATEST. If no glassware is available for the dilution the TITRATOR can be used for that purpose.

Dilution 1 : 5 means that 1 ml has to be diluted to 5 ml. Using the TITRATOR with the syringe graded from 0 to 74 and the blue wheel in position 6 x 500 one has to put two portions of the sample into a test tube. After substitueting the syringe with a clean one (or after washing it thoroughly) fill it with desalted water (or water without the substance to be analysed). Then add to the two sample portions 8 portions of the water (add 6 portions, fill the syringe again with water and add further 2 portions). Most of the COLORTESTS or SPECTRATESTS require only 5 ml of sample. In these cases the exact quantity of diluted sample is directly available in the test tube.

The advantages of the TITRATESTs towards the classic laboratory titrations are considerable:

  1. – easy portability of the equipment, with the possibility of carrying out analyzes even in places other than laboratory;
  2. – low cost per analysis;
  3. – reduction of substances to be disposed of;
  4. – elimination of distilled water consumption for washing;
  5. – convenience and ready availability of all the equipment and reagents needed for titrations;
  6. – both the titrants and the indicators as well as any auxiliary reagents are also supplied in in particularly inexpensive replacement packs to further reduce the cost of each analysis.
